姚建年的主要研究工作是通过分子设计和分子间弱相互作用的控制,易讨易制备有机纳米/亚微米结构,易讨易研究这些纳米/亚微米结构的光物理和光化学性能,并在此基础之上开展一些应用基础研究。这项工作表明,薪更堆积方式对晶体材料的激发态和PL各向异性具有重要影响,表明多晶型纳米结构在多功能纳米光子器件中的巨大应用潜力。普法2009年当选中国科学院院士。
